Rooted in Trust: Living Unshaken in Troubled Times

Jeremiah 17:7-8

When life feels uncertain and decisions do not align with your purpose, whether in finances, family, work, or health, what grounds you? How do you balance immediate wants against long-term goals when past mistakes weigh on you and the future is unclear?

Jeremiah 17:7-8 uses the image of a well-rooted tree by water to illustrate faith and trust in God. Jeremiah urges us to reflect on our struggles’ root causes and seek strength from God’s word and community.

He says, “But blessed is the one who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him.

They will be like a tree planted by the water that sends out its roots by the stream.
It does not fear when heat comes;
    its leaves are always green.
It has no worries in a year of drought
    and never fails to bear fruit.”

A person who trusts in the Lord believes His Word, relies on His promises, and remains steadfast despite circumstances or emotions. Such a person is truly blessed and fortunate to place their hope in God.

How can someone stay grounded in God’s promises?

1. When facing an inconvenient situation, meditate on God’s word, and claim His promises.

2. Rejoice in the Lord because God takes pleasure when we rejoice even when the circumstances do not align with one’s expectations. 1 Peter 5:7 says to cast all of cares on Him because He cares for you.

3. Confess your sins and ask for forgiveness James 5:16, 1 John 1:9.

Sometimes, remaining grounded means acknowledging our need for help beyond ourselves. It is not a weakness to reach out, it is wisdom to seek encouragement and wise counsel when life’s burdens become too much to carry alone. Throughout Scripture, we see that God often meets our needs through the support of others: friends, mentors, and those equipped to listen and guide us when our own strength is flagging.

As you strive to remain rooted in faith, consider not only clinging to God’s promises in solitude but also inviting supportive people into your journey. Whether talking with a trusted confidant, joining a faith community, or seeking professional counseling, these steps can help reinforce your spiritual foundation. You do not have to weather the storms of life in isolation, sometimes God’s provision comes through the helping hands and listening hearts around us.

Dear Jesus,

We so desire to be like that tree that is planted by the waters, and our faith is deeply rooted in the truth of Your Word. We will grow deeper in Your Word and our roots will extend beyond our own faith or ability toward success. Our success is embedded in You and Your plan and purpose for our lives. As we grow by casting our cares on You and trusting in You, that You will continue to deepen our relationship with You and those for whom You entrusted us to care. It could be our children, family, job, church, neighbors, and our own lives.

Lord, we love and desperately need you.
